Daniel Rehn

Biography

Daniel Rehn is a California-based artist, designer, and scientist exploring culture and media. His work transforms ephemeral moments into aesthetic artifacts in the form of visualizations, installations, and interactive experiences. Daniel is a co-founder of the Re:Game research lab and the Playpower Foundation. Additionally, he is creative director for the experimental music label Aesthetic Empiricists and a key member of the low-tech collective Dutycycle.

Raised by a scientist and an engineer in the vast wilderness of the Midwest, his curiosity for wonderment both analog and digital was nurtured from an early age. Building spaceships from scrap heaps and carving cave fortresses while simultaneously constructing a pre-Internet scene of ANSi art and trax music — his youthful explorations evolved into a lifelong pursuit. Daniel is working towards an MFA at University of California, San Diego, he previously received a BS in visual arts from Bradley University.

Daniel presents his work at a wide array of venues, most recently: ETech 2009, Postopolis, and Maker Faire. He is presently a researcher with the Software Studies Initiative at the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts. In 2009, he received a Digital Media and Learning award from the MacArthur Foundation and HASTAC Initiative.
