The Intertwingling of Openness and Data in the Future of Education: A Presentation in Three Parts.
David Wiley
Fri., June 11, 12:30–2:00, Great Hall
First, an argument that openness is the only way of doing education. To the extent that we share, give, and are generous with our knowledge, our time, and our selves, learning will flourish. To the extent that we withhold, restrict, and conceal these, learning will suffer. Some implications. Second, a look at what MMO companies, book retailers, DVD rental companies, and the corner grocer have in common — they all capture massive amounts of data about their customers and use analytics to improve their services in (near) real time. Education as a counter-example. Finally, a discussion of what is possible when a firm commitment to the principle of openness is combined with an essentially infinite capacity to capture and analyze educational data.
