Elisabeth Hayes
Biography

Elisabeth (Betty) Hayes is Professor in the Division of Learning, Technology, and Psychology at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education. She is currently a co-PI for the COMPUGIRLS program, an NSF funded program that engages low income adolescent girls in using new digital media such as Teen Second Life and The Sims to address issues of social justice, while developing their computational thinking and critical literacy abilities. In addition to this project, her current research interests include understanding how the social and cultural aspects of online gaming communities support learning, particularly the development of fluency with digital technology. Betty has published widely on the topics of gender, gaming, and learning; her recent publications include Woman as Gamers: The Sims and 21st Century Learning (co-authored with Jim Gee) and the forthcoming edited volume New Literacies in Videogaming Affinity Spaces (co-edited with Sean Duncan). She also is the chair of the Learning in Games track for the 2010 Foundations of Digital Games conference.
