Susan Millar
Biography

Susan Millar is director of the Education Research and Development Group of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and a senior scientist at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at UW-Madison. She is a nationally recognized leader in science education research, evaluation and policy, who for more than 20 years has been a catalyst for organizational change and research-based approaches to improve learning in the sciences, engineering and mathematics. She also is a sought-after facilitator and advisor, with a history of bringing together diverse groups of people and ideas to develop new approaches to science education and shape new concepts to help organizations achieve success. Her work at the Morgridge Institute for Research focuses on improving public understanding of key concepts in science, biomedicine and health care, and health outcomes. To advance these efforts, Millar’s team is developing digital games- and simulation-based learning resources.
A cultural anthropologist by training, Millar earned her doctorate from Cornell University. She joined the UW-Madison in 1982, where she has played diverse roles as an educator, scientist, and leader. For example, she is the founder and former director of the UW-Madison’s Learning through Evaluation, Adaptation and Dissemination Center. Dr. Millar is the author of more than 45 publications and scores of reports and conference papers.
