David Birchfield is a media artist, researcher, and educator. His work is focused on interactivity and experiential media system design as applied to creative and educational spaces. This includes the development of new frameworks for real time interaction, interface design, and generative media. David is an Assistant Professor in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering at Arizona State University. Since 2005 he has steered a trans-disciplinary group of researchers and practitioners to develop SMALLab, an embodied learning environment. This effort has directly impacted thousands of students and educators through a national network of university, museum, and K-12 partners. His research has been funded by the MacArthur Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and by Intel research. His research and creative work has been published and presented in venues throughout the North America, Australia, Europe, and China.
