Candace Barriteau Phaire

Biography

Candace Barriteau Phaire is a doctoral student at New York University in the Department of Teaching and Leaning, with a focus on teacher development and mathematics education. She earned an MS in elementary education, while simultaneously working as an elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, New York. She has taught graduate courses in early childhood mathematics methods, literacy education, and new student seminar as an adjunct faculty/research assistant at New York University.

While teaching elementary school, Candace learned the value of videogame play to many students. This was evident when one of her struggling mathematics students lost his composure as a result of his sports videogame. This incident ignited Candace’s desire to explore the potential for mathematical development through sports videogame play.
